Re-issue of K Asif's 1960 war drama, about a doomed love affair which threatens to unsettle an entire nation, and the collision between passion and loyalty to one's family.
Set in the 16th century AD, Mughal-E-Azam charts the tempestuous relationship of Akbar The Great (Prithviraj Kapoor), ruler of the Mughal empire, and his eldest son Prince Salim (Kumar), the heir to the throne whose love of women and wine constantly infuriates his father. When Salim falls under the spell of dancer and temptress Anarkali (Madhubala), the future of the empire is threatened. Determined to save Salim from himself, Akbar takes matters into his own hands, ordering that the boy must suffer a most terrible punishment: to be holed up alive
