Belated release for Tony McNamara's 2003 comedy. In a world of conformity, Placid Lake (Ben Lee) has always stood out.

From as young as five, Placid's bohemian parents Doug (Garry McDonald) and Sylvia (Miranda Richardson) encouraged their boy to embrace his individuality, no matter what. As a result, he is bullied mercilessly at school, developing a strong bond with fellow misfit Gemma Taylor (Rose Byrne), whose mother dies when she is young.

Placid and Gemma's friendship endures their adolescence, never truly sparking into a romance.

As the twenty-something years beckon, Placid secretly takes a job at a large insurance company behind the back of his parents, knowing full well that they will think he has sold out.

Determined to fit in for once in his life, he even cuts his hair and wears the same grey nondescript suits as his co-workers. Unfortunately, as much as he tries to hide his off-kilter view of the world, Placid's spirit shines bright.
