EXTRA railings are being installed at Andover's Vigo Infant School site over the Easter holidays - the first step to better control traffic on the campus of five schools following the tragic death of an infant school pupil last month.
Hampshire County Council met with the chairmen of governors and headteachers from Winton, Norman Gate, Mark Way and Vigo Junior and Infant school recently to discuss measures that could be taken. All the schools are based on the site.
As an initial step it was agreed that additional railings would be installed at the Vigo Infant School site during the Easter holidays.
Further work will also be undertaken to identify the most effective way of managing traffic on and off the site, including improving the turning circle at Norman Gate School, making an additional pedestrian access for Vigo Junior School and reducing pedestrian movements across the Vigo Infant and Norman Gate School site by pupils from other schools.
A School Travel Plan produced by all five schools was agreed by the county council in September 2004, and £100,000 has so far been allocated from the council's Safer Routes to School budget for implementation from this month.
David Kirk, county council's executive member for education, said: "This was a very productive meeting."
