THERE are no plans for the NHS to use the secure unit for the mentally ill proposed for the site of the derelict Rothsay Hotel, near Weyhill, according to a letter received by MP Sir George Young.
Sir George wrote to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Strategic Health Authority to find out whether the health service had both plans to use the unit and the finances to do so.
In reply Gareth Cruddace, chief executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Strategic Health Authority said the proposal had raised some concern within the local health economy as there was 'no awareness' of it other than information staff had picked up through the press.
Local Primary Care Trusts were making other arrangements. A new 23 bedded low secure NHS facility is opening in Southampton in the second half of 2005/2006.
This unit will enable patients at Ravenswood medium secure unit facility in Fareham to step down to a more appropriate facility.
