RECEPTION class children at Burley Primary School are lucky they have another six years at the school.

That is the opinion of one pupil reported in the latest Ofsted report on the school, which the education watchdogs describe as "good overall".

Their report says: "Because teaching is good, pupils achieve well.

"Overall leadership and management are good and the school gives good value for money. Parents are very pleased with the quality of education provided for their children."

Among the school's main strengths are a high standard in maths, science, speaking, listening and reading at Year 6.

Pupils are well taught through the effective teamwork of four full-time and two part-time teachers and half-a-dozen teaching assistants.

Governance is good, pupils "are helped to become pleasant mature individuals" and special needs teaching is well provided.

New head teacher Claire Lowe comes in for particular praise for her "dynamic and effective start to leading the school".

On the downside, children do not achieve as well as they could in learning to write, they are not always clear how to improve their work and the programme of work in ICT is not as effective as it should be.

Mrs Lowe, 35, a mother of two pre-school age children, said all issues were now being addressed in the school improvement plan.

"Writing was just not happening. It was happening in English but it was not happening elsewhere in the curriculum," she added.

Children will be using the school grounds more to study and drama will be brought into play to make more use of the written word.

Addressing the other shortcoming, Mrs Lowe said: "I've just spent £30,000 on a new ICT network of laptops and PCs."
