THE Paultons Golf Centre team of Neil Williamson, Robert Tang, Michael Self and their professional Mark Williamson set a new record score in winning the Hampshire PGA's 2005 Algarve Pro-Am Tournament.
Although the Paultons quartet shot an amazing 54-under-par total for the four-round event, they only won the tournament by one shot from Walhampton's Kevin Saunders and his team of Phil Thomas, Martin Baily and Terry Sanders.
The Dunwood Manor team of Nick Smith, Paul Bedford, Chris Ryder and Neil Phillips had led the 72-hole Pro-Am, played at Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima, after the first round.
Williamson's team moved into the lead after the second round with an 18-under round at Quinta da Ria. It was a lead that they were never to relinquish despite Saunders' team's final round, a best-of-the-week score of 21-under at Quinta de Cima.
The professional event was won by El Paraiso's Daniel Westermark. The former European and Challenge Tour player compiled an excellent four-round total of 278. Chilworth's Ceb Aby took second place with Petersfield's Greg Hughes third.
The week had begun with a Bowmaker tournament at Islantilla Golf Club in Spain. Fleming Park amateur Trevor Bush, ably assisted by his professional Ian Warwick, won the event with 42 points after a countback from El Paraiso's Mike Oliver. South Winchester's Jonathan Barnes and Westermark shared first place in the professional event.
Hampshire PGA secretary David Wheeler said of the event: "It was the best overseas Pro-Am in my five years as secretary.
"The weather, the courses and the hotel were all excellent and all the teams thoroughly enjoyed their week on the Algarve."
