YOU ARE a man living in Southampton, in your 30s, single and you work with computers.

Could this be you or someone you know?

Because these are the key ingredients that make you one of the most miserable people in the country!

A nationwide survey has revealed that being a male who lives in the south coast city, just turned 30 and split up from a girlfriend or a wife makes you one of the unhappiest people in Britain.

And if you spend your days working in information technology, answering an endless list of complaints about broken computers or jammed emails you will truly be feeling down in the dumps.

The survey, which quizzed 2,000 people across the UK, found Southampton to be the country's most miserable place to live - beating Plymouth, Edinburgh, Norwich and Manchester to claim the dubious honour.

Meanwhile the happiest cities were found to be Leeds, Belfast, Sheffield and Newcastle and the most jovial professions included those working in healthcare, finance and media.

The survey, carried out by fuel company Jet, quizzed 2,000 people across the UK, asking how happy they felt and how often they smiled.

Spokesman Roy Roley said: "The study exploded a number of cultural beliefs. We often stereo-type older people as the Victor Meldrew generation, but in fact men and women over 55 were revealed as the happiest group in society."
