A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER from Hampshire is celebrating her 100th birthday.

Lillian Pain, of Nursery Road, Bitterne Park, enjoyed a luncheon party and also received cards from the Queen and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to mark the occasion.

The mother-of-one was joined by dozens of family and friends at her home to honour the event.

She said: "I think the best part of turning 100 is being with all my family and friends, as well as the celebrations. It's too wonderful to put in words. I'm one of the lucky ones and I've been blessed with such a long and wonderful life and a lovely family.

"I'm also overwhelmed about receiving cards from the Queen and Margaret Thatcher."

Lillian grew up in south London and worked for more than 20 years as an administrative secretary for a builder's merchant.

In the 1930s she married William Pain and moved to Kent, where she stayed until seven years ago, when she moved to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Southampton.
