William Golding's brilliant novel is reborn in this compelling production, courtesy of Pilot Theatre.
When eight schoolboys are marooned on a desert island after a plane crash, we appear to enter the world of a boys' own adventure.
But who will take control with no adults, no rules, no parameters?
The themes of bullying, violence, identity and power are presented as the thin veneer of civilisation is stripped away to explore the innate evil in all of us.
Stylishly staged, a macabre plane wreck is effortlessly transformed into a mountainside, a shelter and a sacrificial altar. A haunting soundtrack evokes atmosphere and tension.
A young and able cast use visceral physicality to show the breakdown of all order. Although this is a worthy adaptation that hints at the multi-layered depth of the original novel, many of the nuances of characterisation are lost.
