Kevin Pietersen is set to make his Test debut in two months' time - but he also has his heart set on winning a trophy with Hampshire this summer.
England one-day star Pietersen and the rest of Hampshire's squad have spent the last three days at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, as they prepare for their first season in the first division of the county championship and the totesport league.
And batsman Pietersen, who is expected to be handed his Test debut against Bangladesh in May, is convinced Hampshire can mark his first season at the Rose Bowl with the county's first trophy since 1992.
The 24-year-old said: "I've only trained twice with the boys but it's clear that there's a lot of talent and a lot of depth here. We've got 24 players in the squad now which is what you need for a successful season, and ideally we'll end it with a trophy - that's what we all want.
"I spoke to Rod Bransgrove the other night about our targets and that's some sort of silverware - and a cup final."
Pietersen is in line to make his debut against Gloucestershire at the Rose Bowl on April 13, when Hampshire begin life as one of the few counties in the top flight of both competitions - along with his former club Notts.
Pietersen added: "You cannot compare Hampshire with Notts. There are better players down here, the club is run much more professionally and the structure and the discipline of the players is much better. Everyone works together and there's a great mixture of youth and experience, and that can only be good."
Hampshire's chances of success will depend on how the squad copes with the absence of Shane Warne and Simon Katich during the Ashes series, as well as Pietersen.
"I can't wait for the first game but there is enough depth for there to be players who can fill our shoes later in the season," added Pietersen.
"Nic Pothas and Shaun Udal are both experienced blokes and Chris Tremlett is capable of taking a lot of wickets, to name just three players."
Pietersen is also backing his best mate and housemate Richard Logan, 25, to be a success for Hampshire this season.
"He's a heck of a bowler who bowls up there in the late eighties, he's a great asset, but for some strange reason unbeknown to me or him he was out of favour at Notts. At the moment we're both getting to know Southampton and have been driving around trying to figure it all out, but everyone has made me feel welcome.
"I was at the bank in Southampton the other day and some people came up and wanted a picture and a few autographs, which is the sort of thing I'm beginning to get used to, but I'm concentrating on my job which is to do well for Hampshire."
Pietersen could play his first game for Hampshire in a one-day friendly against Essex at Chelmsford on Monday, April 4.
