A DOUBLE decker bus hit a low bridge at the entrance to Charlton on Saturday afternoon slicing off the whole of the roof.
Nobody was travelling on the upper deck when the accident happened, at about quarter to five.
It left a trail of debris in its wake.
IT contract worker and amateur photographer Ray Gilbert, was on the scene to record the aftermath as police and ambulance arrived on the scene.
He said: "It was very lucky the bus was empty. "Anyone on the top floor would have been covered in glass even if they had ducked to avoid the bridge. "There was glass everywhere."
Officials at Test Valley Borough Council have promised to take a look at the area to see whether anything more can be done to warn drivers of buses and other tall vehicles about the height of the bridge, which is just 11ft 9ins high at its lowest point.
