THE reigning Wessex champions won the battle of the big guns in Berkshire.
A 22nd-minute header by Jamie Musselwhite from a Liam Green corner was enough to give leaders Winchester a 1-0 success in their summit meeting with third-placed AFC Newbury at Faraday Road.
Thatcham leapfrog their Berkshire neighbours back into third spot.
But Town boss Jason Braidwood admitted that the disappointing 1-1 home draw with relegation strugglers Portland had "spoiled my weekend".
Yet it could have been worse for Thatcham.
Carl Mutch missed a penalty before Bob McClay gave Thatcham an interval lead that was cancelled out after 70 minutes by Nick Murray.
