NETWORK Rail will carry out its biggest track maintenance project over the Easter weekend.

The work in the Basingstoke area will affect all South West Trains' services in and out of Southampton from London.

Lines will close from early on Good Friday and reopen on Tuesday, March 29.

During the closure more than two miles of track will be renewed, and about 10,000 tonnes of ballast and 4,600 sleepers replaced.

The company said it was essential the work went ahead and that Easter was a quiet time for the rail service.

Robin Gisby, Network Rail director of operations and customer service, said: "Network Rail is committed to rebuilding the railway and Easter is a good opportunity as there are fewer people using the trains.

"All of our resources will be employed in carrying out these essential improvements which will increase performance, bringing long-term benefits to passengers."

Alternative travel arrangements have been made by South West Trains who will operate replacements bus services all weekend between Basingstoke and Winchester and Basingstoke to Andover.

Passengers are advised to check their travel arrangements with National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950 or individual operators before making their journey.

Wessex Trains has the most services arriving on time in the south, according to the latest performance figures from the Strategic Rail Authority.

A total of 85.6 per cent of the company's trains were punctual in 2004. South West Trains achieved 77 per cent punctuality.
