The date is sometime during the First World War and these are some of the Southampton women who once worked at the margarine factory at Prince's Street in the Northam area of the city.

It was back in the early part of the last century that the factory, which was featured in a Hampshire Heritage feature last Saturday, first opened its doors processing barrels of fat that was shipped into Southampton from Paris.

This photograph, from the Southampton City Council publication Chapel and Northam, was taken in the early part of the last century and shows many of the local women from in and around Northam who worked at the factory.

The Auguste Pellerine Margarine Factory was a prominent part of the area and its tall chimney could be easily seen by people using Northam Bridge back in those days.

After surviving the bombing of the Second World War, the margarine factory finally closed down and production came to an end in April 1948.
