FOUR City of Southampton swimming Club youngsters have achieved qualifying times for the Southern Counties District Championships.

At the Hampshire County Age Group Championships last weekend, two of the younger swimmers qualified for the first time.

Alex Cameron Calvo achieved FOUR qualifying times in the ten-year age group - in the 200m butterfly (3.21.17), which he won, 200m freestyle (2.47.57), 200m backstroke (3.01.97) and 200m individual medley (3.05.68).

He also stormed to victory in the 50m butterfly (36.28) and set a new Championship best performance, was second in the 50m backstroke (38.07) and third in the 50m freestyle (32.96).

Along with his breastroke times in 50m (48.17) and 200m (3.39.49), his performances won an award for seventh place overall in his age group.

All his swims were personal bests. It was an incredible achievement, considering he wasn't even ten at the time. He celebrated his tenth birthday the following day!

Abigail Slater, 11, qualified for the district championships in 800m freestyle (11.13.64) and 200m freestyle (2.26.46). She also set personal bests in 100m breaststroke (1.36.16), 100m freestyle (1.13.76), 200m IM (2.58.67), 200m breaststroke (3.21.90), 50m freestyle (33.84), 400m freestyle (5.27.38) and 100m IM (1.24.98).

In the 12-year age group, Sebastian Willcocks also qualified for Southern Counties Championships in the 200m butterfly (2.34.42) and 100m butterfly (1.10.97), both of which he won, 200m freestyle (2.13.34), where he came second, 200m IM (2.34.02) and 100m freestyle (1.03.44) - third in both.

He also won the 50m butterfly (32.01) and most of his races saw personal best times. He took second place overall in his age group.

Samuel Sharpe, 14, achieved his Southern Counties qualifying time in the 1,500m freestyle (17.51.17).

He also swam in the 50m backstroke (33.56), 200m backstroke (2.31.09), 100m freestyle (1.02.37) and 100m IM (1.13.28). He was 12th in his age group.

Leah Husband was ninth overall in the 12-year age group. She won the 50m breaststroke (39.90) and was third in 100m breaststroke (1.30.87) and 200m breaststroke (3.10.84). She also competed in the 200m IM (2.52.36), 100m freestyle (1.07.68), 200m freestyle (2.28.78), 50m freestyle (31.65) and 100m IM (1.17.87).

Competing for the first time at county level, Jaffa Cole, 14, achieved impressive personal bests in 200m IM (2.39.51), 200m backstroke (2.31.11), 100m freestyle (1.04.93), 400m freestyle (4.44.30), 200m freestyle (2.57.21), 100m IM (1.14.97) and 1,500m freestyle (18.31.17).

Zoe Miller, 10, also clocked impressive personal best times in all her events - 200m freestyle (2.46.51), 200m backstroke (3.19.42), 200m breaststroke (3.40.26) and 100m IM (1.28.20).

Clive Hammond swam in the 100m freestyle (1.03.66), 200m freestyle (2.17.24) and 50m freestyle (29.83), all personal best times.

Joshua Willcocks, 14, swam in the 100m freestyle (57.88) and 100m IM (1.06.22).
