A NIGHTCLUB, cinema, ice rink or youth drop-in centre could be on the cards for Winchester, as part of the Broadway-Friarsgate city centre regeneration.

Developers behind the £100m scheme are considering adding a leisure facility following calls at a public meeting.

Residents demanded that young people be given something on the five-acre site, which is to include 360 homes, 40 shops, a multi-storey car park, new bus station, doctors' surgeries and civic square.

Mike Capocci, managing director of Thornfields Properties, said: "We have no problem with the idea of leisure.

"One of the things that came up at the public meeting was the suggestion that there ought to be more for youth in the community and we are seeking to accommodate that proposal."

He said Woolstaplers Hall could become the venue for the facility, and added: "We need to see what is practical to create and does not conflict with other uses. We are genuinely open-minded."

However, bosses at Winchester City Council have warned that the cost had to be considered.

Council leader Sheila Campbell said: "We have to look at the development from all aspects.

"We have to think commercially about the long-term viability of such a facility in a small city the size of Winchester.

"Would it stand on its own feet or require a subsidy. If so, where would that come from?"
