TEAM Southampton's first cross-country season as a newly merged club came to a successful conclusion at Ferndown Leisure Centre last Sunday in the final fixture of the Wessex League.

Team-wise they collected three gold medals, a silver and a bronze. The under-15 girls and under-17 women finished top of the pile and there was double success for the under-15 boys whose A team struck gold and B team took silver. The under-13 boys finished in bronze spot.

Individually, four club athletes stepped on to the medal podium.

Louise Webb grabbed equal first in the overall under-15 girls' standings after a nail-biting finish in the final run-in with Newbury's Sophie Crumly.

The race was so close that the marshalls couldn't separate them on the line and judged it a dead heat.

Amazingly, that meant that the league too was tied between the two athletes.

Team Southampton dominated the under-15 boys' race. Scott Legg led the way with victory on the day and second overall in the age-group. Renato Veraj took bronze for the series despite not being able to run at Ferndown.

The club's other medallist was Sasha Mucci, who placed third overall in the under-17 women's category.
