CAMPAIGNERS have lost their battle to defeat plans for a "graceless tower block" that will form part of a showpiece housing scheme at Hythe. An artist's impression is pictured above.

District councillors have approved proposals to build a seven-storey block of flats on the former Dreamland electric blanket factory site at Shore Road.

The Lantern Building, comprising 22 apartments, will be built on a prime site overlooking Southampton Water.

Plans for an oval-shaped development on the same piece of land were approved by New Forest District Council in September 2003.

Now a revised scheme has been given the go-ahead by the council's planning and development control committee, despite strong opposition to the proposal.

Objectors said the building would be several storeys higher than surrounding houses.

Len Gardner, of Davidson Close, Hythe, told the committee: "It's a graceless tower block that will dominate and detract from neighbouring buildings."

Hardley and Furzedown councillor Graham Parkes criticised the "pagoda-like" complex, saying it was a massive structure that would tower over other homes on the waterfront site.

He added: "The balconies that stick out on the corners will look down into the private gardens of houses that have already been built."

Totton member Robin Harrison also criticised the design. "It's a load of square blocks that has no architectural interest, despite being earmarked for a site where architectural interest is needed," he said.

However, a report to councillors recommended councillors to approve the application. "It is known as the Lantern Building because of its prominence on the headland, its unusual size and somewhat striking appearance," said the report.

"Whereas previous proposals have been for an oval building this application represents a move towards a largely square shape but still picks up much of the original element of the design.

"It would continue to display the original idea of a landmark building with a maritime feel."
