BLACKTHORN winter: There is a local saying that when the blackthorn is in bloom it is always accompanied by a spell of cold weather - so be warned if you think that the weather is beginning to warm up, as it is only just beginning to flower.

However, this shouldn't stop you preparing your garden or allotment for the summer.

The Old Basing Allotment and Garden Society shop at the Riley Lane allotments is now open every Sunday, between 10am and noon.

The "Swap Shop" is also available for exchange of surplus tools and even window frames for those who want to make a cold frame to lessen the effects of the blackthorn winter!

CARNIVAL junior disco: Will be held on Saturday, March 19, from 9.30am until noon, in the village hall.

All children who are between five and 12 years old and resident in the parish are eligible to attend.

The carnival committee will be looking for a carnival princess and attendants as well as a prince and squire to escort her.

The entrance fee is £1.50.

LOCAL Voluntary Service: Nominations of residents for this award should be sent to the parish clerk by Saturday, March 26.

If you know anyone who gives their time to help others in need, then now is the time to show your appreciation.

THE Ivy Club: Is a club for the over 60s, which meets every Wednesday, in the RBL hall, at 1.30pm.
