CELEBRATIONS went long into the night on Stoneham Lane as Trojans booked their return to London Division Four South-West after a two-season absence.

Russell Clarke's side ran in four tries in a comprehensive victory over nearest rivals Sandown & Shanklin and a late consolation could not detract from the achievement of going one better than they did last term, when they bowed out in the play-off.

There was no repeat this season as they controlled the game from start to finish, moving into a commanding 21-10 interval lead and stretching this in the second period when Ian Hudson scooted over.

Thrilled coach Pete Surtees heaped praise on his players, particularly scrum-half Mark Sharpe and the second row pairing of Tom Mackintosh and Jon Brothers, who performed outstandingly.

The coach, who was jumping around "like a two year old" by his own admission, was delighted.

"We have deserved this honour," he said, "and the lads have worked hard to get it. We played some good rugby over there, although we did leave some tries on the park, but every time we went forward, we looked like we were going to score. Now we can concentrate on building for next season - an important year for the club."

Hurricanes must wait to see who and where their play-off will take place in late April as any one of five clubs from Surrey One jostle for the promotion places.

Attention in Hampshire One turns to the relegation battle and the question of how many clubs will face the drop - as many as four or as few as two in danger.

With two rounds of games to play, Millbrook did their chances no harm with a nerve-jangling 20-19 success over Nomads which keeps the Portsmouth-based side deep in trouble alongside New Milton & District and Farnborough.

Dean Weaver's side were relieved to hear the final whistle as they were reduced to 14 men midway through the second half and Nomads roared back into the game which would have gone their way if the match had lasted any longer.

Adam Cripps ran in two tries for the hosts while Dominic Sales claimed the third.

Much-changed New Milton & District face continued uncertainty after they were mauled by an impressive US Portsmouth backs display in going down 44-10 - a result that moved Services into relative safety.

More than half the side changed in midweek due to injuries and unavailability which forced number eight Jamie Ramsey, scorer of Milton's only try, to play in the centre - among many other enforced changes.

Fareham Heathens can breathe slightly easier after they came through a difficult encounter with already-relegated Alresford, scoring a try in each half and doing enough to shut out the hosts.

Trevor Illingworth opened the scoring and skipper Jamie Daly added a second but Alresford refused to lie down and peppered the Heathens line without success after the break.
