FOLLOWING its phenomenal success in the West End, the 75th anniversary production of R C Sherriff's Journey's End comes to Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre from next Monday until Saturday, March 19.
Directed by David Grindley - whose credits include Abigail's Party (Hampstead Theatre, West End and on tour) and Excuses (Soho Theatre) - Journey's End (pictured) is set in 1918, in the British trenches at St Quentin.
A company of officers prepare for a daring raid across No Man's Land, in advance of the long-awaited German offensive - a day that saw the deaths of 38,000 men.
This compelling play, based on the author's own experience of the front and life in the trenches, shows humour and courage in the face of certain tragedy. It remains an important reminder of the horrors of war and the real, unromanticised heroes who fought it.
Recreating the role of Osborne is Philip Franks, who received great critical acclaim for his part in the West End production. He is renowned for his roles in The Darling Buds of May and Heartbeat.
Tom Wisdom, who stars in the Sky series Mile High and who also appeared in Coronation Street as hairdresser Tom Ferguson, will play the role of Stanhope. The cast also includes Stephen Casey, Roger Walker, Steven Hudson, Richard Glaves, Simon Shackleton, James Staddon, William Gregory, Christopher Knott and Edward Fulton.
Filled with humour, courage, fear and the reality of war, Journey's End is as pertinent now as ever.
