TIDWORTH councillors have voted for the community to become an official town as of 1 May this year.
Former parish council chairman Humphrey Jones said the move would help distance them from the 'Vicar of Dibley' image of parish councils and assist in the attraction of much-needed inward investment.
Councillors voted by 12 to three to back the move which will see the parish council replaced by a town council - but councillors promises there will be no mayor, no chains of office and no hike in council tax.
