THERE are not many plays that can boast about winning more awards than any other play in history, or a hugely successful 18-month Broadway run.
However, from April 12 The Mayflower in Southampton stages a production that can lay claim to both of these incredible achievements.
J B Priestley's An Inspector Calls is set before World War I and tells the story of the prosperous Birling family who, one night, receive a sudden and unexpected visit from a mysterious police inspector.
Inspector Goole is investigating the shocking death of a destitute girl.
His startling revelations crush the foundations of the apparently respectable family.
Could it really be possible that one member of the Birling family might be morally responsible for the death of the unknown girl?
Directed by Stephen Daldry, who also directed the films Billy Elliot and The Hours, the play has been praised for its stunning set and sweeping score and has been described by some as a modern masterpiece.
Starring actor Nicholas Day as the eerie Inspector, this compelling production is certain to grip the imagination of the audience right until the shattering finale. It runs until Saturday, April 16.
Tickets from £14.50. Box office: 023 8071 1811.
