Romsey Town recorded their first win in four home games to beat Amesbury at the Bypass Ground.

The game with their mid-table opponents was evenly poised until a curling Simon Woodley free-kick on 60 minutes swung the game in Romsey's favour.

Romsey boss Trevor Holmes stuck with his revolutionary 3-6-1 formation despite being forced into team changes. Jamie Hookway and Simon De'ath were unavailable for selection, so Aaron Wickes and Jay Ricketts were called up for Town.

The highlight of the first half was Woodley's tenth minute shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar.

That effort aside the game was largely non-eventful with the two sides cancelling each other out.

A tactical change at half time helped open the game up, with John Romero encouraged to move forward to support Dean Constable in attack.

The second half was end to end for the first fifteen minutes with Mike Hookway making three point blank saves to deny the visitors a surprise lead.

A mazy run from Andy McIsaccs down the left ended in the midfielder being upended and allowed Woodley the opportunity to open the scoring.

The Romsey player bent the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner, and his team thereafter grew in confidence and got on top of the game.

It had been a hard graft for Constable on his own up front, but his determination paid off when he put the game beyond doubt with just ten minutes remaining with an individual goal.

Wickes' through ball found the striker who shrugged off one defender, jinked around another, dragged the ball back, took it around the keeper and poked home the goal.

Manager Holmes said, "Constable showed pure determination and strength throughout the game.

"Mike Hookway was also tremendous in goal, making some absolutely brilliant saves while the game was still goalless."

Holmes now faces a dilemma whether to keep his unorthdox but successful formation for the game at Andover New Street tomorrow (12th).

He hopes to welcome back Jamie Hookway to his squad as well as De'ath, the division's leading scorer.
