THE Southern Daily Echo's Jeremy Wilson has been honoured with the top prize for regional newspapers in the British Sports Journalism awards.

The 28-year-old sports writer was named Regional Sports Writer of the Year at a ceremony in London attended by the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Matthew Pinsent and Ian Botham.

His series of articles included a feature on how former Southampton and England footballer Danny Wallace is coping with multiple sclerosis and an exclusive interview with Sir Alex Ferguson as well as his reports on Gordon Strachan's departure as Southampton manager last year and the controversy over the possible return as manager of Glenn Hoddle.

Organised by the Sports Journalists' Association of Great Britain and supported by UK Sport, the awards are judged by a distinguished panel of judges, including former Minister for Sport Lord Moynihan.
