MEMBERS of the group which won its battle against plans for an asylum centre close to homes in Lee-on-the-Solent have vowed to carry on - more than a year after their victory.

The Daedalus Action Group (DAG) convened to discuss whether it had a future, with the future of former airbase HMS Daedalus still undecided.

The group has decided it will remain, ready to respond to any new plans for the 500-acre site.

DAG will only disband when government agencies the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) have decided a way forward.

Members want to wait until the threat of asylum-seekers being housed nearby is completely removed.

Chairman John Beavis said: "Although very unlikely, asylum remains an issue. Redevelopment of this site is largely in SEEDA's hands and is not going to happen overnight.

"I believe the DAG must keep a watching brief over the site and be ready to respond until we are certain that the asylum issue is no more."

Defence chiefs have said a report on the way forward for HMS Daedalus is imminent.

The involvement of SEEDA and the MCA looks likely to signal that the land will be used for housing and industry and as a launch pad for air sea rescue operations.
