TYPICAL! You wait years for somebody to name a bus after you - then suddenly your get an entire fleet named in honour of the great and good of our fair city.

Last year the late Daphne Topple, who was a regular Uni Link bus user, was given the first accolade. A double-decker bus was named after her.

Now our readers are being invited to choose just who should be given the honour of having a bus named after them in Southampton. Uni Link, based in Portswood, runs a network of buses in the city. They were initially set up to carry students across the city but Uni Link now welcomes residents from across the city to climb aboard.

Daphne, who lived in Winn Road, used to use the service regularly with her husband Peter until her death in January 2004. It was then that bus chiefs decided to formally dedicate a bus to her memory. It went so well that Uni Link have decided to name the rest of their fleet of double- deckers. Nigel Barnes-Evans, spokesman for Uni Link, said: "We wanted it to be about people from Southampton's past, people who have lived in or who are closely associated with the city.

"This is a way of commemorating the famous residents in Southampton's history. It's about honouring people who are no longer with us for their achievements and contributions in making the city how we now find it."
