AFTER weeks of uncertainty the decision has been taken to save Andover Carnival - but its success will still depend on more commitment from Andover people and businesses.
Andover Lions Club president Fred Harper said this week that the decision to hold the carnival - which will be staged on Saturday 25 June - was not taken lightly.
He said: "As most are aware, Andover Lions Club is a charitable organisation and as such cannot afford to make a financial loss."
Mr Harper pointed out that there was a substantial cost involved in organising the carnival. But despite previous appeals - including two front page stories in the Andover Advertiser - only six people have contacted the club with offers of help.
"These calls offered both organisational help, which is desperately needed, and also financial assistance - but not nearly enough to cover the cost involved," Mr Harper added.
"The club would still like to see commitment from local businesses and shops with backing for both sponsorship for carnival expenses, and also support for their own em-ployees in encouraging them to enter a float in the carnival, thus raising their company's profile."
