THIS is the stunning 21st century vision shown above of modern waterfront living that could soon be towering above Southampton.

Rising on the banks of the River Itchen, where Vosper Thornycroft used to build warships, the development will house up to 1,500 people and provide 1,000 jobs.

The £350m scheme could see people living on the site as soon as the summer of 2008.

The 12-storey towers are built on "fingers" jutting into the river in order to offer as many riverside apartments as possible. At least 25 per cent of the scheme will be affordable housing.

Key aspects of the development include extending Victoria Road down to the riverside to include more shops and a marketplace intended to create a new "vibrant heart" for Woolston. The 36-acre former shipbuilding site was bought by the South East England Development Agency for £15m when VT quit Southampton last year for the most advanced warship factory in Europe in Portsmouth.
