SHELAGH Delaney's A Taste of Honey comes to the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth from Wednesday.
Delaney wrote the play when she was just 19 and it won her several awards as well as being made into a hit film starring Dora Bryan and Rita Tushingham.
The play focuses on Jo, a teenager who lives in a slum bedsit after being deserted by her nagging, whorish mother Helen. Jo is pregnant by a black sailor and her greatest fear is that her illegitimate baby might be mentally deficient like her own father. Bringing a little light and care into her life is Geoff, a homosexual art student.
One-off Productions will be performing the show. The group formed three years ago with the aim of presenting classic, great plays that are on school and college exam syllabus. Artistic director David Lippiett says: "As we are not a membership company it means I can invite the best of amateur talent in Hampshire to act and direct."
New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth from Wednesday, March 2 to Saturday, March 5 at 7.30pm. Tickets: £8 Box office: 023 9264 9000
