Mottisfont 4 Broughton 1 THE return leg of this local derby didn't quite have the drama of their meeting earlier in the season, when Font scored twice in injury time to snatch a point.
On this occasion one good factor was that both sides finished with eleven players on the field - both had had a man sent off when the teams locked horns at Broughton.
In fact, Saturday's encounter was a little on the tame side, with neither side quite producing their best form. No-one, however, could question the final result, with Mottisfont virtually controlling the match throughout to run out comfortable winners.
The hosts started strongly, and in the first minute wasted a glorious opportunity to take an early lead when Ian Bradwell failed from three yards out.
Putting that behind them, Font kept up the pressure and were rewarded with the breakthrough after ten minutes when a Mike Burgess centre was sliced past Broughton keeper Neil Collis by his central defender Lee Strange.
Although the visitors tried, they didn't make much impression on the Font defence and Paul Fielder in the home goal was rarely seriously troubled.
Broughton almost conceded a second goal when Bradwell won a chase against the onrushing keeper, but just couldn't get enough power on his shot. Stuart Perkins just prevented it from crossing the line, but was fortunate to see his clearance strike the bar, ricochetting around the goal before it was hacked away.
With the interval looming Font did score a second goal. Bradwell made sure this time, latching on to a through ball and coolly placing his shot past Collis.
Neither side could claim that they were making inroads early in the second half, with a lot of the play confined to midfield.
However, the match came alive when Broughton were awarded a penalty. Nobby Carr's spot kick was kept out by the driving Paul Fielder, and a frantic scramble ensued. Adam Barker eventually forced the ball home to bring the visitors back into the match.
Any aspirations of Broughton staging a grandstand finish were quelled when five minutes later. A fierce Alan Smith free kick wasn't cleared, and Keith Smart fired home a rare goal from the edge of the area.
Mottisfont consolidated their overall superiority with seven minutes remaining when a neat passing movement resulted in a cross from the left. Alan Bundy, returning from a back injury, headed home Font's fourth goal.
