STUDENTS at University College Winchester were able to use their £700,000 hi-tech pavilion at Bar End for the first time last weekend.
The new centre replaced the old wooden building, which was burnt down by vandals two years ago.
It's been designed to be as vandal-proof as possible and has the latest in surveillance equipment. It's also highly energy-efficent in use and allows for further expansion if necessary.
There are four changing rooms and a recreational and bar area for teams taking part in football, rugby, hockey and cricket.
It's hoped that an all-weather pitch, available for community use, may join the facilities in the near future.
The official opening of the building formed part of the annual 'Winton Weekend' festivities with matches between past and present members of college teams.
"All the returning Alumni and spectators were impressed with the modern design of the pavilion and the commitment that the college is now making to improve its sporting facilities," said Justin Ridgment, Director of Campus and Conference Services.
The pavilion and sports pitches can be used by outside bodies when not in use.
