A PLUCKY charity shop manager was subjected to an horrific attack after confronting a thief.

The 49-year-old woman was working in the back office of the RSPCA shop in London Street, Basingstoke, when the thief entered, grabbed her handbag and a clock and tried to escape.

The woman, who has not been named, challenged the man, but he struck her in the arm and punched her in the face.

She fell to the ground and the man ran off with the clock and handbag, which contained cash and jewellery.

The woman suffered a broken wrist and injuries to her face and neck in the attack. She needed hospital treatment.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at around 10am last Friday.

Officers have released a description and e-fit (pictured above) of the man suspected of carrying out the robbery and assault.

The suspect is described as around 25 years old, 5ft 10ins tall with an olive complexion. He was wearing a green bobble hat, grey or black anorak and a casual top.

Pc Nicola Epps, of Basingstoke police, said: "This was an horrific attack on this lady and she sustained serious injuries as a result.

"I would urge anyone who can offer any information about this offender to contact us."

Jo Barr, spokeswoman for the RSPCA, condemned the thief.

She said: "It is upsetting to hear about what has happened, and very upsetting for the member of staff concerned.

"I think any crime is very disturbing, but particularly so when a charity shop is targeted in this way, as all the money raised goes to help the welfare of animals."

Miss Barr added: "The member of staff concerned was badly shaken by the incident, but I understand she is very resilient. She is not going to let this put her off."

Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact Pc Epps on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
