THE ELDERLY woman killed when her electric buggy collided with a Tesco lorry has been named by police as Lillian Read.

Lillian, who had only celebrated her 90th birthday three weeks ago, was killed on a pedestrian crossing outside Buckler's Court, Lymington

The former foster mum, who had been widowed for about 20 years, had thrown a party for friends and neighbours at her bungalow in Efford Way, Pennington, to celebrate the occasion.

Guests included neighbour Marjory Nash, who described the pensioner as "very jolly".

She added: "Mrs Read was a very friendly, outgoing woman who was game for anything and didn't seem like an elderly person. She was always out and about on her buggy.

"She loved animals and used to own a cat and a dog. When they died she felt she was too old to replace them but she had a budgie and a guinea pig."

Another friend said: "Mrs Read travelled to Pennington and Lymington on her motorised buggy almost every day. She loved to see other people's dogs on her travels and always had time to chat to their owners, having had her own dog until about three years ago."

As reported in yesterday's Daily Echo, the road was closed for several hours while police recovered her body and investigated the crash.

The lorry driver, from West Molesey, Surrey, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but was later released after questioning. A police spokesman said: "The driver was helping police with their inquiries but was later released pending further investigations."
