Sir.-While I am in favour of bringing the speed limit of Heath End Road down to 30mph, and providing a pedestrian crossing, I do also believe very strongly that speeding should not automatically be seen as the cause of the accident that was reported in last Friday's Tadley Gazette.
I do, however, feel this was an accident waiting to happen.
With the majority of school-children not wearing helmets these days, and not taking the cycling proficiency test, and having watched the kids ride three or four abreast, it was an unfortunate inevitability that something nasty would happen.
I feel there should be some enforcement of helmets and about the cycling proficiency test. Schools, parents and the police should all play a part in this.
It isn't just about traffic calming, but also education and enforcement - among children and adults alike, whether in cars or buses, or on bikes.
My thoughts are with everyone involved in the accident and anyone who witnessed it happen.
