STUDENT radio Surge is going FM from this weekend.

From Saturday morning householders will be able to tune into 87.7FM to catch up on the latest happenings at Southampton University.

Station manager Matt Treacy explained that it was a golden opportunity for some of the student DJs to target a new audience and boost the station's popularity across the city.

He said: "We'll have 28 days of airtime on FM coinciding with the build-up to the

student union elections and it's the union that's funding us. It helps boost the profile of the student union and is an attempt to get students interested in campus life. It will also give the public a chance to hear what we're about."

Surge has been broadcasting for the past 22 years from the Glen Eyre Halls of Residence and is usually found at 1287am. The FM licence runs until March 18.
