BAGHDAD is a city that everyone has read about or seen on television virtually every day since the start of the war in Iraq.

It is also the name of a run-down bungalow in north Hampshire which could be full of Eastern promise for those scouring the property market for an opportunity to create their dream home.

Baghdad, in this case, is located in Chapel Lane, Baughurst, and is being sold through estate agents Dreweatt Neate for offers above £300,000.

In gardening terms, the half-acre plot that Baghdad stands on could well be described as a "war zone" - and not just because it is overgrown.

The property was once used as a car breaker's and mechanic's yard and several scrap vehicles still litter the site. There are also a number of corrugated iron outbuildings.

Because of the wrecked vehicles, the agents are advising viewers not to take children to the site.

Simon Randall, a partner in Dreweatt Neate, said the real attraction of Baghdad is its location.

He expects it to be razed to the ground when it is sold and a new home built.

He added: "I have no ideas as to why the bungalow is named Baghdad."

The property is on the edge of Baughurst village, where it backs on to farmland. It is reached by a private lane.

The eventual new owners will have to apply for planning consent to build a replacement dwelling on the site.
