A SPECIALLY arranged series of tours around England's historic capital Winchester have been set up to mark International Tourist Guide Day.
The aim of the tours is to give people a taste of just how much they can see and learn about the old city when they are shown around by a qualified guide.
International Tourist Guide Day is being celebrated on Monday. It's been running for 14 years and was created by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations to showcase the work of guides around the world.
In Winchester the city's Blue Badge Tour Guides, who last year celebrated their silver jubilee anniversary, will be making the most of the day by offering residents and visitors free tours around the city.
Four special tours have also been arranged in March to follow on from the event, and will see the guides focus on specific parts of Winchester's rich heritage.
The tours concentrate on the four ancient gates to the city - The Northgate on March 5, The Westgate on March 12, The Southgate on March 19 and The Eastgate on March 26, and cost just £4 per person.
Hania Banyard for the Blue Badge Tourist Guides, said: "Tourism is important to Winchester and its rich history attracts visitors from many different countries.
"To be shown around by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide can make their visit a much more enjoyable experience."
Elouise Appleby, head of tourism at Winchester City Council, added: "The Blue Badge Tourist Guides are ambassadors for the city, and are the human face of Winchester for many of our visitors.
"They are essential in providing visitors with a good experience and can give people insights into the city that only someone with a wealth of information and a passion for their city, can offer."
