A HAMPSHIRE MEP has criticised plans proposed by the German government to impose a tax on airline fuel.
Nirj Deva described the plans, which were discussed at the European Parliament in Brussels, as "bad for business and bad for Hampshire".
The proposed measure caused outrage among representatives of the aviation industry who are concerned about possible job losses at Southampton International Airport and the possible negative side-effects to the local economy.
Mr Deva, an MEP for south-east England, said: "These proposals are highly irresponsible and have the power to undermine the local economy of Hampshire as a result of less air traffic and job losses.
"The airline industry is currently suffering from high fuel prices and to impose extra taxes on fuel will seriously jeopardise the future of many smaller airlines."
He added he would do all he could to oppose the proposals.
"If imposed..it will be a slap in the face to the people of Hampshire."
