THE chance to see one of the rarest sights in Winchester is on offer at the moment, thanks to the unseasonable drying out of Winchester Cathedral Crypt.
The Norman-style crypt lies under the east end floor of the 800-year-old building and was once used as a final resting place.
These days no bodies are held in the area, though carved stone sarcophagi are still present and, alongside Anthony Gormley's emotive statue Sound II, bring a distinct atmosphere to the rooms.
Tours of the crypt are still available while the crypt floor stays dry and further details can be obtained by calling the cathedral office on 01962 857200.
