Bursledon readers could be set for a new library now that Eastleigh Council has agreed to chip in more than £300,000 towards the project.
The executive committee has earmarked £309,000 from its community investment programme as a contribution towards the scheme.
The project would be developed by Hampshire County Council as part of its library service and would allow the existing community centre at Lowford to spread its wings. The package includes environmental improvements to provide a garden and a barbecue area plus improved cycle and access arrangements.
There will also be council cash for a possible car park extension.
Eastleigh Council has worked closely with Bursledon Community Association in developing the project with the library service.
Council leader Keith House said: "We have welcomed this chance to work together with local people and the community association.
"Once agreements have been reached with the community association, parish and county councils, it is expected work will be able to start on the scheme later this year. When completed, it will bring real benefits to the Bursledon area."
