HAMPSHIRE police are on the hunt for a new batch of special constables - and are launching a campaign weekend to attract new recruits.
There are nearly 50 specials working in Eastleigh, Romsey, Hedge End and Andover at the moment.
The volunteers play a vital role in supporting full-time officers and freeing up police for crime-fighting.
On February 26 and 27, the team will be at key locations, such as Eastleigh's Swan Centre, providing information to people thinking of taking up the challenge to become a special constable.
Insp Brian Gravenor, responsible for west Hampshire's specials said: "Special constables have all the powers of their full-time colleagues in Hampshire.
"They undertake a whole range of duties to support the regular officers. For most, providing the welcome and reassuring sight of a uniformed officer on the streets for a few hours a week reinforces the link between the police service and the public.
"It is a very rewarding role and specials get a real sense of pride and achievement by putting something valuable back into society."
To be a special you need to be:
Between 18 and 50 years old
Of good character
In good health.
Everyone who joins is put through an initial four-week training programme and receives ongoing training, adding up to a couple of hours each month.
