CAMPAIGNERS trying to stop cars speeding past their Winchester homes have presented a petition to the city council.
Janet Berry is battling for traffic calming measures to be put in place on Milland Road in Highcliffe.
She has gathered 150 signatures from people living in Milland Road, Vale Road, Portal Road and St Catherine's Road.
Concern is growing that children and the elderly are being put at danger on the busy access route to the Bar End playing fields.
Use of the fields will increase as University College Winchester is developing its sports facilities there.
Addressing the Cabinet, Ms Berry said: "I urge you to consider traffic calming."
She said it would be a fitting way to mark the 75th anniversary of the building of the road.
Council leader Sheila Campbell congratulated Ms Berry on the clarity of her presentation and said the council would examine her proposals.
Ward councillor Chris Pines said the fiasco over supported housing in 2002-3 at Fivefields Road had ironically acted in the best interests of the estate.
Mr Pines said: "It acted as a catalyst for people working together. It's been great."
He said he was keen to try to get a Homezones scheme for Highcliffe whereby speeds would be limited to 20mph.
"There is a greater impetus for it now. Money is available from Europe. We need traffic calming on Milland Road and Fivefields Road. The problem is worse at weekends when students come to play football and rugby and race through."
Highcliffe would meet the criteria for the Homezone as it only has two roads into the area - Milland Road and Fivefields Road.
