ELLEN MacArthur has been promised a hero's welcome when she returns to her home on the Isle of Wight.

The Cowes-based sailor looks set to be given the Freedom of the Island - an honour only previously bestowed on Oscar winning film director Anthony Minghella.

Chairman of Isle of Wight Council, Peggy Jarman, will be recommending Ellen receives the honour at a meeting of full council on February 22.

There are also plans to stage a civic reception and an open-top bus tour for the record-breaking sailor.

Cllr Jarman said: "We are working with Ellen's team to get a date fixed, but I am sure that she is going to want to have a well earned rest and spend some time with her family first."

Cllr Jarman e-mailed her congratulations to Ellen as soon as the yachtswoman completed her marathon voyage.

The e-mail said: "The Isle of Wight sends you its warmest congratulations on your magnificent achievement on completing your solo non-stop round the world challenge in record time.

"The people of the Isle of Wight have followed with much interest your voyage around the world during the last 71 days and are full of admiration for your outstanding courage and expertise, proving once again that you are a truly remarkable yachtswoman.

"The Island is delighted that you have chosen us as your base enhancing its already proud maritime tradition.

"I look forward to congratulating you in person on your return to the Island."
