It was a case of draws all round for Gosport & Fareham, Portsmouth and Havant but, for the London Division Two South pair, that was not good enough to aid their respective causes.

Gosport & Fareham's result doesn't move them out of the bottom three while Portsmouth lost ground on leaders Barnes in their quest for promotion. Havant did move back up to sixth but were very fortunate to do so.

A considerable amount hinged on a penalty try awarded to Sidcup against Gosport in the final quarter but Gary Middleton's late response ensured the Dolphin Crescent outfit came out of the game with a point.

However, many felt there was a knock-in in the build up to the awarded score and the official even apologised to the home side for the error, which left them a little deflated.

Skipper Simon Burns tried not to use this as the main talking point, although it could have been more serious than it was for the peninsula side.

"He's got a bit of stick but turned around and said 'if I made the wrong decision I'm sorry' but sorry is not good enough really. He's made the decision but it hasn't changed the game. I gave a penalty away and they scored from it so you can't say it all hinged on the penalty try."

Navy winger Jon Hogarth scored a try to open the scoring for the hosts before Sidcup hit back before the break and the even contest ebbed and flowed with the lead changing hands on a couple of occasions before parity existed in the end.

"We could have folded but we came back from five points down and got a draw," continued Burns. "And that was better than not coming back at all and losing."

Portsmouth suffered the surprise loss of a point at mid-table Wimbledon - 21-21 - which leaves them a point shy at the top and all will now rest on the meeting of the top two next month.

Havant tossed away a great opportunity to capture more than just three draw points in National Three as they should have, on more than one occasion, shut the game out but poor defending let Weston-super-Mare in for a 25-25 tie.

It was the home side's first points in six games and how grateful they were to Havant for them as they were more than generous in allowing them three tries and a late penalty to snatch their share of the spoils.

Dylan Raubenheimer picked up a brace of tries for the visitors but his director of rugby, Adam King, was barely impressed. "Three points are welcome but it was an untidy performance and we have been found wanting in defence again," he complained.
