SENIOR citizens are already starting to book their places at a so-called "grey haven" in Chandler's Ford - even before the first brick has been laid.

The multi-million-pound state-of-the-art housing paradise for the over-60s at Valley Park must still clear a major planning hurdle.

Late last year the scheme suffered a setback when Test Valley Council's southern planning committee voted by ten to nine to refuse planning permission.

Now Winchester-based charity Brendoncare has launched a fresh bid to win council backing for a proposal which will deliver a "total care package" for the older generation. Their resubmitted application is likely to be considered by Test Valley in early March.

In a bid to muster more public support, Brendoncare has held an exhibition and open morning at the Valley Park Community Centre.

Neighbouring residents were given a further chance to look at the proposals which includes a 20-bedroom nursing centre, 37 two-bedroom care apartments, a fitness centre, hairdressing salon, a library and a licensed restaurant with facilities being shared by the local community.

The apartments would be rented or sold on a leasehold basis to people over 60. Brendoncare chief executive Ron Staker said there had already been 20 inquires from people who would like an apartment.

More than 200 people attended the exhibition and there was overall support for the plans.

Denis Tranah, who lives in nearby Ampfield, believed that it was a well thought out scheme.

He said: "It is essential to have this type of advanced facility in the community."

Mr Staker said their aim was to move nursing care into the 21st century and he added: "We want to be a part of the community."

If the planners give the thumbs down again, the charity says it has not ruled out launching an appeal.
