SUMPTUOUS sandwiches created by a trio of young chefs at a Southampton school have earned top prizes in a national competition.
Freemantle Cnurch of England Infant School pupils Ramoan Stirling,6, Izzie Curtis, 5, and Destiny Abram, 7, all walked away with second, third and a runners-up prizes respectively after wowing judges with their healthy butties.
The youngsters chose salad, vegetables and a variety of low fat ingredients to beat off competition from more than 8,000 entries from 300 schools.
Kevin Barnett, head teacher at the 122 pupil school for four to seven-year-olds said: "The children came up with some fantastic ideas for healthy sandwiches.
"It was a shame we were pipped at the post for the top prize but it's a great achievement and a tribute to our pupils' healthy approach to food that we managed to win three prizes when up against such tough competition."
The design competition was sponsored by snack company Greggs. Each participant received a special certificate and the Freemantle Infant winners were also each presented with a £20 book voucher.
