ROAD safety engineers are due to visit the site where teenage friends Lewis Grundy and Jamie Gosney died in a moped accident to see if any improvements can be made.

Members of Hampshire County Council's safety engineering team will carry out an assessment of the stretch of Brownhill Way, Nursling, between the junction of the M271 roundabout and the junction with Redlands Lane.

It was along this unlit section of road that rider Lewis, 17, and pillion passenger Jamie, 15 were killed after they were in collision with a Volkswagen Golf on January 21 at 11.23pm as they were travelling in the direction of Lordswood.

Although Southampton City Council is responsible for the upkeep of most of Brownhill Way the section where the accident happened is the responsibility of Hampshire County Council.

A spokesman said members of the safety engineering team would carry out a full assessment of the road and carry out an appraisal of the circumstances of the crash.

"If all parties involved are agreed that something needs to be done we will look at different measures. This might include lighting, white lines, new signage and anti-skid surfaces."

The spokesman said it was standard procedure for the safety engineering team to visit the scene of an accident if there were any fatalities.

However, no one from Hampshire County Council has yet visited the site as they must wait to be notified by police of the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.

Meanwhile, the funeral of 15-year-old Jamie Gosney of Buttermere Close, Millbrook, was taking place today at St Peter's Church in Maybush at 11.30am.

The funeral service of Lewis, 17, who lived with his father Richard in Palm Road, Aldermoor, will be held on Thursday at Hollybrook Cemetery Chapel.

Police are still appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Call the investigation team codenamed Operation Pacific on 0845 045 4545.
