RESIDENTS in Fareham have upped their recycling rates in a bid to reach their 40 per cent target.
Latest figures show 27.06 per cent of household waste was recycled between January 10 and 23 - a rise of nearly 3.5 per cent. It follows a Christmas slump to 23.61 per cent.
As previously reported in the Daily Echo, council chiefs have warned residents of the government's 40 per cent recycling target to be achieved between now and next year.
Failure would see the Department for environment Food and Rural Affairs imposing a financial penalty.
Fareham currently has facilities for recycling glass, textiles and paper and civic leaders are urging residents to use the service.
The council is to introduce a new collection system in a bid to increase recycling.
Health and environment chief Councillor Brian Bayford said: "The latest figures are encouraging, in that it's a step in the right direction, but we urge residents to do everything they can to help increase the amount of recycling and cut down the amount of rubbish."
