SITTING in the stands at St Mary's to watch her beloved Saints take on Pompey, Caron Patmore felt somewhat underdressed in her jeans and jumper.

Last time she watched the FA cup fourth round clash between the two rivals in 1984, she had come straight from her own wedding ceremony - and still had her dress on.

Despite being on opposite sides of the south- coast footballing divide Caron and Ron - her husband-to-be and a Portsmouth fan - agreed that the match was not to be missed.

So, after exchanging their quick "I do's" at Fareham register office, they dashed to Portsmouth's Fratton Park to see Saints win one nil.

When the teams drew each other again in the fourth round 21 years on the couple, pictured, who now live in Brighton and have a 17-year-old son Ian, knew just how to celebrate their anniversary. And the result went 43-year-old Caron's way again, with Southampton winning 2-1.

Meanwhile, a highly-organised policing operation resulted in just four arrests of supporters, three for public disorder and one for criminal damage of a seat within the St Mary's stadium. The police presence, involving 440 officers, including riot-trained police, dog handlers and mounted police ensured the event passed off without major incident. Head of Southampton police, Chief Supt Paul Stickler was delighted with the outcome saying: "This was a tribute to the hard work of the clubs at the stadium, some skilled policing and the co-operation of local licensees and businesses."
